  ABSTRACT      Eggshells are 95-97% calcium carbonate crystals which is one of the components of bone. This study from the Department of Surgery, San Juan De Dios Hospital was designed to investigate if eggshells are ideal substitute for bone graft, specifically to evaluate bone healing with eggshell-derived bone graft substitute in chicken’s tibia. Sterilized powdered eggshells were packed in the induced fracture in chicken’s tibia. Radiographic and Histopathologic examinations were done on the 4th and 14th post-operative day respectively. Results showed that there are cortical thickening noted at the proximal segment of the fracture site denoting early periosteal changes based on x-ray; and microscopically showed presence of inflammatory cells, fibroblasts cells, newly formed blood vessels around the eggshell and migrating osteoblast around the eggshell. Eggshell derived bone graft substitute obtain several characteristics of an ideal bone graft such as: biocompatibility, osteogenesis and osteoinduction, thus making eggshell bone graft a potential bone graft substitute.
